CREDIT PRIVACY NUMBER – WHAT IS CPN?
If you’re struggling with poor credit scores, you know they can pose plenty of challenges. A poor credit score can keep you from getting approved for a credit card or a car loan. It can make renting an apartment difficult. So when you see an ad promising to help you start over with a new credit history by getting a (credit privacy number) CPN, it may seem like the answer to your prayers. But is it?
Wat is Credit Privacy Number
A CPN, or credit privacy number, is a nine-digit number that’s formatted just like a Social Security number (SSN). It may also be called a credit profile number or credit protection number. Companies that sell CPNs to consumers market them as a way to hide a bad credit history or bankruptcy. They’ll also claim you can use the CPN instead of your SSN to apply for credit with your new credit identity.
Does this seem too good to be true? That’s because it is. In fact, it’s illegal. Keep reading to discover the truth about CPNs.
Relationship Between Credit Privacy Number and Credit Score
Companies that sell CPNs promote the assumption that CPNs are authentic by marketing them as substitutes for SSNs. One website that promotes CPNs, for instance, states that the numbers are “completely tri-merged with the Social Security Administration.” (Sounds official, huh?)
These businesses are actually hustlers. They might gain SSNs in questionable ways, frequently from minors, the elderly, or prisoners.
There are several indicators that Credit Privacy Number dealers are participating in illegal activity if you pay attention. Companies will charge you money for a CPN even though SSNs are provided free of charge — thousands of dollars occasionally. When you apply for credit through the CPN, they might advise you to use incorrect information—like a different address, phone number, or email address. Frequently, they’ll claim that doing this will protect your identity, but in reality, they’re just telling you to take on a phony persona.
It is simple to dismiss these cautionary signs when you are desperate to restore your credit. However, utilizing a CPN might result in much more serious issues than just a bad credit rating. Using the CPN in a credit application or elsewhere may be regarded as identity theft regardless of how it was acquired. In addition, lying on a credit or loan application or misrepresenting your SSN is a federal crime.
Difference Between CPNs, ITINs and Social Security Numbers?
In order to enforce tax rules, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) uses taxpayer identification numbers. Taxpayer ID numbers come in two varieties: SSNs and Individual Taxpayer Identification Numbers (ITINs). The Social Security Administration issues SSNs, which are typically used by taxpayers when submitting their taxes.
ITINs are granted by the IRS under specific conditions to some non-resident and resident aliens, as well as to their spouses and dependents who are unable to get SSNs. An ITIN is formatted similarly to an SSN, with nine digits and dashes, but all ITINs start with the number 9.
CPNs are nine-digit numbers that resemble SSNs and ITINs.

Obtaining A New SSN
It’s normal to wish you could start again when poor credit is costing you money or prospects. Nevertheless, obtaining a new SSN is not the solution. The IRS may only issue a new SSN if:
- Multiple family members being assigned sequential SSNs is problematic.
- The same SSN is allocated to or used by more than one individual.
- Using the original SSN of an identity theft victim is causing them continuing problems.
- A person is experiencing abuse, harassment, or risk to their life.
- You object to the letters, numbers, or digits in your original SSN due to cultural or religious reasons.
A new SSN can be difficult to obtain, even under these dire circumstances. You’ll need to demonstrate that there is a valid basis for the change by submitting all the required papers to the Social Security Administration and obtaining assistance from others (such as the police, your church, or your temple).
More importantly, having a new SSN does not allow you to discard the previous one. The Social Security Administration will cross-reference your new SSN with your prior SSN to ensure you are given credit for all of your earnings and get the appropriate amount of Social Security payments when you retire. No matter what you do, your initial SSN will always be associated with you.
How to Build Your Credit Score
You can’t instantly wipe away bad credit by purchasing a CPN. A better approach: Take the money you would have spent on a CPN scam and put it toward rebuilding your credit history the right way. Here’s how:
- Punctually pay your bills. The single biggest element affecting your credit score is on-time payments. Paying your bills on time will assist, even if you can only afford the minimum amounts. Set yourself a reminder or enable autopay on your accounts to prevent forgetting to pay a bill on time. Ask the creditor if you can modify your due date if you find it difficult to pay all of your bills at once because they are all due around the same time. Are you reliable when it comes to making on-time payments on your phone, cable, or utility bills? Consider enrolling in Experian Boost® so you may add these accounts to your credit file and take advantage of your good credit history.
- Your credit usage ratio should be lower. In determining your credit score, this ratio, which comes in second only to payment history, reveals how much of your available credit you are actually using. You should utilize no more than 30% of your available credit to maintain decent credit, but for the best scores, think in single digits. Find out how to determine your credit usage ratio and how to raise it.
- Delay requesting credit. A hard inquiry is made on your credit report when a lender requests your credit file from one or more credit agencies in response to your application for a loan, credit card, or another sort of revolving credit. The number of hard queries lowers your credit score. Applying for numerous credit cards or loans at once may indicate to credit scoring models like FICO that you’re in financial problems, which might lower your credit score even though the dip typically only lasts a few months.
- Keep open past credit accounts. If using credit cards drains your finances, canceling the account after using one could seem like a wise approach to reduce temptation. However, doing so also lowers the total amount of credit you have available, generally raising your credit utilization ratio. Maintaining older accounts open also demonstrates your extended credit history, which raises your credit score. Maintaining older credit accounts active may be a good idea, even if you don’t intend to use them.
- Try using Experian Boost. – Experian Boost helps you get credit for your on-time utility and telecom payments by adding positive payment information to your credit report. In many cases, this results in a boost to your FICO® Score☉
